Sometimes it’s good to get together and do good work. Sometimes it’s good just to get together! Here are some programs that allow people to do just that—and more!
United Church Women
In 2017, Wesley-Knox United Church Women (UCW) will celebrate 55 years of fellowship and service. Monthly meetings and UCW projects provide women with opportunities to serve, get to know one another and build a network of friends. To learn more about UCW, please visit the main UCW page here.
Wesley-Knox Men
Wesley-Knox Men meet at the Family Circle Restaurant, 147 Wellington Street, at 8:30 am on the first Sunday of each month. On the second Sunday of every month, Wesley-Knox Men serve coffee to the congregation after Sunday service. From September to June on the second Saturday of each month, 8:45–10:30 am, Wesley-Knox Men, wives and friends serve a free, nutritious community breakfast to as many as 100 people in need. The group accepts donations and also raises funds for these breakfasts by hosting an annual Ham and Scalloped Potato Supper and a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. To learn more about Wesley-Knox Men, please contact Neil Eadie here.
Sip ’n Serve
This group meets for coffee at 9 am every other Wednesday and then moves about the church completing odd jobs listed in a book kept in the church office. A pleasant way to spend a Wednesday morning that saves the church considerable money! For more information and exact meeting times, please contact Sip ’n Serve leader Cathie Banks here.
Movie Nights
Movie Nights are offered at 7:30 pm every second Friday in blocs throughout the year. Movies are shown in the Centennial Parlour. There’s free popcorn and cold drinks, followed by decaf coffee and dessert. Family Movie Nights begin one-half hour earlier at 7 pm. Children are encouraged to wear pajamas and bring blankets and teddy bears. A great way to spend a Friday night and meet others in the church. For latest Movie Nights schedule, please click here.
Youth Groups
The Junior Youth Group is for young people in grades 5-7. It meets on the first Sunday of every month and at other times for special activities or if the group chooses. Group leader Chris Nichols advises that this group offers fun and engaging activities centered on its members growing in relationship with one other and learning more about their faith. If you’re in grades 5–8, he hopes to see you there!
The Senior Youth Group is for young people in grade 9 and up including those attending college or university. The group meets most Sundays at the church 6:30–8:30 pm for fun and fellowship. Members can use a Facebook page to keep up with scheduled events or check the church bulletin. Highlights of a typical year include weekend retreats, Worshiplude in Ottawa and a Youth Forum at Pearce-Williams Christian Centre near Iona, Ontario—an event that brings together high school youth from all over London Conference. Other activities are the annual Wake-a-thon, movie nights, coffee houses and evenings of just playing games. Once a year the group conducts a Sunday church youth service. Brian Mackinnon, part of the group’s leadership team, advises that if you join, you will find out this group likes to eat. Many events involve food! He says, please join us!
Family Outings
These fun activities, organized by the Christian Education Committee, include hikes, ice skating, spring and fall roller skating at North London Optimist Centre and winter tubing at River Valley. For latest information, contact organizer leader Jane Walker here.
Camp Pearce-Williams
Friday afternoon to Sunday noon on the last or second-last weekend in June at Pearce-Williams Christian Centre, Elgin County Road 9 (Iona Road) 9 km south of Highway 401. Campers may come for a day or the whole weekend. Those staying overnight bring sleeping bags and sleep in cabins. Meals are served in the main dining hall. Activities include hiking, games, swimming, crafts and campfires. The weekend ends with a wonderful outdoor church service. For information on this year’s camp, 2012 June 22–24, please click here.
